Painting a background sky with clouds

Oct 16, 2025

So… Eventually when my moving boxes are all packed out and the big model train room is cleaned up and ready to be worked on, I will have to start with painting the walls and ceiling sky-blue, and of course I want some clouds in there as well. Problem is, I have no idea yet how to paint this, so I decided to start practicing in my little (54x27inch or 137x68cm) closet room model layout.

Final look of the sky with clouds:

First, after cleaning up this little space, I painted the entire closet room back in the same color as it previous was, and matching its bigger sibling closet room, which is now a bookcase and the main layout control center. Black. Yes black. Since the base color for the sky is a light blue, I needed to first paint the background white. After painting two layers of white primer, I then added a regular white color of wall paint I used in my entire home. After this dried I applied two layers of the sky-blue paint so there was a good coverage of blue. At first, I thought it was a great color representing the sky, but eventually It was just a plane constant color of light blue, not really a sky, if I compared it with the outside sky, while I stepped outside of my home and looked up in the sky.

So, I’m going to try painting clouds. If I don’t like the outcome, then all I have to do is add sky-blue over the clouds and start over again. Which I did at some point.

First, I tried to create a haze (gradient) from light to dark, but it still was not to my liking. After watching a few Bob Ross videos on YouTube on how to paint little happy clouds, I attempted to paint on a few clouds with the same white wall paint and mixing two badges, one with a small amount of blue and one with a small amount of black and call it the day. But still… I was not happy with it. These were not clouds, just weird looking spots of different colors.

Then after watching a few more YouTube videos, this time especially focused on clouds on model train backgrounds, I finally found a video explaining this in an easy method. I noticed a few different things, but probably most important was the paint used. I went to the arts and crafts store top purchase the exact same materials as the gentleman in the video. And I am now happy with the outcome, both the sky-blue color with a haze as well as the clouds.

The YouTube video I found very helpful and that I followed to the letter:
