When I started building my layout in what used to be my old bedroom (and kidsroom), I needed to find a location for my 6 individual display cases, made from medicine cabinets.
Many years ago, I found a good deal at Kmart where they had 6 medicine cabinets on sale for an irresistible price. Being Dutch I could not pass on that deal. Once I started working on my little closet in this room, I thought of attaching 4 of the 6 cabinets together on the wall, right above my little layout. Initially I was thinking to remove the sides of the cabinets where they meet, but I thought that would be too much of a modification, that would result in too much work that it would have been better to build a complete displaycase, so I decided to leave them the way they are and just add shelves inside, as seen in the picture above.
One thing I wanted to be sure off is that they are really secured to the wall, I do not want to wake up one day and see they fell on my little layout underneath. I also wanted them to be lined up as close as possible. So, I first attached a small piece of wood to the wall where the bottom 2 cabinets rest on. I mounted all 4 cabinets and then I added shelves in each to be able to display more trains. I am finishing the whole display case with a clean bright white paint.
Adding the extra shelves. I found a nice piece of lumber, already primed in white color and the size was perfect to be used without too much work. All I needed to do was cut the two pieces into 8 little ones. Since I have a 3D printer I designed and printed a bunch of “shelf holders” as I call them, to keep the shelves on identical heights. Now all I have to do still is paint the inside of this display case and I will probably add a trim to hide the seem in the center of this case. I also have to get the clear plastic panels cleaned up and installed. And yes, I still have to paint the closet molding, where the door used to be, black.
